Mentoring is an effective way of imparting and developing professional skills. A mentor is usually an expert in a given field who shares his experience, knowledge and skills. The mentor acts as a guide to the mentee in the given topic and supports him in professional development. Most of the questions are asked by the mentee, and he tries to get as much information as possible from the mentor.

What is the role of the mentee?

Initiator

The mentee is the main driver of the mentoring process. His task is to initiate the meeting with the mentor, actively seek opportunities for his development and be proactive in communication. This role involves not only organizing meetings, but also continually looking for ways to best utilize the mentor's knowledge and experience. The mentee should always be prepared with questions and topics they want to discuss during the meeting and should be able to identify areas where they need additional support.

A studious student

The mentee must be open to new knowledge and willing to learn. This means that he actively listens to the mentor, reflects on his advice and incorporates new knowledge into his practice. The mentee is willing to receive feedback that can be key to further growth. The mentee should have a positive attitude towards learning and be ready to overcome challenges and obstacles that may appear on the way to their goals.

Goal oriented planner

Setting clear and specific goals is crucial for the mentee. In cooperation with the mentor, the mentee creates a plan that defines what he wants to achieve through mentoring. This plan should be realistic, measurable and include a time frame. The mentee should be responsible for monitoring their progress and continually reassessing their goals and tasks as the situation warrants.

Intern

The mentee must be able to apply the learned knowledge and skills in real life. This means that he should be able to reflect on his practice and identify areas where he can apply advice and insights from the mentor. The mentee should be prepared to respond flexibly to feedback from the mentor.

Together, these roles form the basis of successful mentoring, where the mentee actively works on their development and makes the most of the opportunities provided by the mentor.

What is the role of a mentor?

Guide and advisor

A mentor is a guide and advisor to the mentee in a given professional topic. His main task is to share his experience, knowledge and skills acquired during his professional career. The mentor thereby supports the mentee to develop and achieve their professional goals.

A source of expertise

As an expert in a given field, a mentor provides unique expertise and personal experience not readily available from other sources. The mentee can thus draw on the mentor's practical experience, which will help him better understand complex topics and situations.

Feedback provider

The mentor provides constructive feedback that is key to the mentee's development. It helps the mentee to reflect on his work, identify strengths and areas that need improvement. This feedback encourages constant learning and growth.

A motivator and supporter

The mentor plays a significant role in motivating the mentee. It supports, encourages and gives him the confidence to overcome challenges and strive to achieve his goals. A mentor provides the support and inspiration that is often necessary to maintain motivation and persistence.

The role of a mentor is multifunctional and includes various aspects of supporting and developing the mentee. A mentor is not only a source of information, but also a guide, motivator and role model that helps the mentee grow both professionally and personally. Quality mentoring thus contributes to the effective transfer and development of professional skills, which is key to success in any field.

Tip: Activity in mentoring

In mentoring, the mentee should always be more active. He is the one who wants to move forward, who has to work on himself and fulfill the agreed tasks. The mentor devotes time to the mentee in meetings, he should not take away tasks instead of the mentee.
